Theodore Roosevelt from his newly built home at Sagamore
Hill
ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. (1858-1919). Twenty-sixth President
of the United States (1901-9). Autograph Letter Signed, “Theodore
Roosevelt,” on his imprinted Sagamore Hill stationery. One full
page, octavo. “Syosset Station, L.I., Oyster Bay P.O.,”
July 30, 1886. Very fine condition. To “My dear Mrs. Whiton.”
Roosevelt writes:
“I am greatly indebted to you for your
very courteous offer, but I do not at present feel able to take such
a position as you suggest. Tomorrow I leave for the week. With renewed
thanks for your kindness I am most truly yours, Theodore Roosevelt.”
In 1886, Theodore Roosevelt left his hard ranch
life in the West to run for mayor of New York City. As Republican
candidate, Roosevelt came in a disappointing third. In December, he
married his second wife, lifelong friend Edith Kermit Carow, to whom
he had been secretly engaged for the past year. The nuptials took
place in London, and the couple soon after returned to the United
States to live in the new house Roosevelt had purchased on Sagamore
Hill in Oyster Bay, Long Island.
