BRADLEY, JOSEPH. (1813-92). Associate Justice of
the Supreme Court (1870-92). Autograph Letter Signed, “Joseph
P. Bradley,” on ruled, imprinted Washington, D.C. stationery.
Two pages, octavo. Stowe, Vermont, September 2, 1885. Very fine condition.
To “My dear Rawle.” Bradley writes:
“I duly received your kind letters and
a copy of your addresses — two copies, I think, and I have read
the address with much pleasure. The use of a college education for
other purposes than mere professional success are well stated, and
as a means of such success able demonstrated. But that is not all
— nor principal. The savory seasoning of bitter salt, and the
charm of cultured phrase and allusion clothe the oration with a grace,
and give it a charm, which make it highly pleasurable reading. If
you are at Greenwood (New Jersey!) when I come to Trenton, it will
certainly give me great pleasure to call on you and Mrs. Rawle. I
am uncertain yet whether I shall be there on the first or second week
of the Court. I shall correspond with Judge Nixon on the subject.
Mrs. Bradley and my daughter warmly reciprocate Mrs. Rawle’s
kind remembrances. Ever yours sincerely, Joseph P. Bradley”
